Smith ton nullifies Warner's as Sixers do the double over Thunder
Posted By: sardar on 16-01-2026 | 12:42:31Category: Political Videos, NewsDavid Warner's (110* off 65) second century of this year's Big Bash went in vain as Steven Smith (100 off 42) put on a masterclass in batting as the Sydney Sixers completed the double over Sydney Thunder. Chasing 190, the Sixers riding on Smith, comfortably chased down the total with five wickets and 16 balls to spare.
In front of over 40,000 people at the SCG, Babar Azam was the first to get the case moving with two boundaries in the first two overs. Smith pulled the fifth delivery he faced into the stands, showing a sign of things to come. Smith welcomed Nathan McAndrew into the attack with 6,4,6 - the second six a 107-metre shot that hit the roof of the SCG, before Babar rounded the 22-run over with a boundary. Smith brought up the 50 off just 23 balls with a six over point in the 9th over. Babar moved into the 40s with two boundaries off Tanveer Sangha as the Sixers soared past 100 in the 10th over.
Cameron Green (1/18) bowled a miserly two-run over and Smith refused a single off the last ball to Babar. The Sixers took the Power Surge and Smith turned it on immediately. He took apart Ryan Hadley for four sixes in a row before carving a boundary.
The over yielded 32 in total - the highest in BBL history. Babar fell to McAndrew after chopping on for 47 and he hit the boundary cushion while walking off. But Smith continued to plunder away as he smashed McAndrew for a six and a four to move to 99 while Josh Phillipe fell on the last ball of the Power Surge. The two overs had yielded 44 runs for the Sixers.
Smith got to his 100 with a single off Sangha, his fourth in BBL history but was stumped on the last ball of the over. He walked back to a standing ovation. The stutter in the middle continued for the Sixers as Moises Henriques and Sam Curran fell cheaply. But Lachlan Shaw and Jack Edwards hit three sixes between them to complete the victory.
Earlier, Warner welcomed Mitchell Starc back into the Big Bash with a 15-run over. He hit Sean Abbott for three fours as he continued his good form. The fourth over saw him go one better as the Thunder raced to 49 for 0 after the first four. Ben Manenti slowed the scoring rate while Starc picked Matthew Gilkes for 12. Warner brought up his 50 off 35 balls but Sam Konstas struggled to find any timing in his innings. His laborious 11-ball 6 came to an end as he skied one to the 'keeper.
With only 34 runs scored from overs six to 10, the Thunder had to get a move on. But Sam Billings too struggled as he fell to Manenti. The Power Surge was taken in the 14th and 15th over which yielded a healthy 38 runs for the batting side. Nic Maddinson swung his willow successfully during his 16-ball stay of 26 while Warner moved into the 80s with a 23-run off Abbott. Warner and Maddinson hit a six each in the 18th over before the former brought up a well deserved ton off 61 balls and went past 400 runs in the season. Curran picked three wickets in the last over as the Thunder eventually finished on 189 for 6.
